Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, is the process of improving the web presence of a website in an organic and unpaid fashion. While you can pay for ads on Google that put you somewhere on the page when certain keywords are entered, organic search results are the best way to go. This is because SEO efforts are the only way that you can find your website as the first result in a Google search.
Although this process takes some time and effort, we applaud Google for making search results something that you can’t outright buy. If your small business has the best pizza in town, you should have that spot on page one because you worked for it. Why You Shouldn’t Just Use Paid Ads
When it comes to gaining web traffic, being in the first few pages of search results is the best solution. In a recent study, researchers found that nearly half (~47%) of all web traffic comes from organic search. This means that someone searched for something and then picked what popped up in the list below the paid ads. This is a whopping number, considering paid ads account for ~1% of web traffic.
Another problem with paid ads is that once you stop paying for them, you are no longer visible and your organic ranking will still be the same. And just because you are visible in an ad such as PPC (pay per click), it doesn’t mean that any of your traffic is converting to actual customers. Diving into Google Analytics, we can see where a site’s traffic is coming from and what they are doing once they get there. On average, organic search visits are showing more than double time spent on a site, twice as many visited pages, a lower bounce rate (almost 50 percent lower) and have higher conversion rates than paid ad visits.
Why You Shouldn’t Tackle SEO Alone
As stated before, SEO takes time and effort to be successful. And while you are juggling your business and family and those rousing weekend golf outings and little league games, there will be little time to make such efforts. Not to mention that Google updates their search algorithm some 500-600 times per year, which you would need to keep up with in order to be effective. Ain’t nobody got time for that.
If you don’t dive into SEO correctly it will be more of a hassle in the long run. It is absolutely more difficult to recover from bad SEO practices than it is to just start the right way from the beginning. Also, Google has been known to dish out penalties to sites for certain “tricks” that coders have come up with. These tricks (although they were well aware it was cheating) were at one point easily snuck into websites as SEO tactics. As an added punishment (as if bad rankings weren’t enough), Google will consider a site spammy and pretty much wipe it out of existence for a certain period of time. If you are going to attempt SEO on your own, please stay away from these practices or any business that utilizes them.
